This week’s Illustration Friday theme is Tribute, and last week’s was Farewell: do you see a pattern emerging, here? Don’t worry, no one died: Penelope Dullaghan, who founded Illustration Friday 10 years ago (a brilliant idea she got there!), decided to leave the reins of IF to someone else, and “to sail once again”. Since IF definitely influenced me when I discovered it, I really wanted to participate this week, and it lead me to an exploration of my old IF file.

How I made a Laurel dress (pattern by Colette) in light denim, struggled to make it fit, added some pockets and a facing of my own design, and even created my own polka dot fabric with paint and q-tips.

Comment j’ai cousu une robe Laurel (patron Colette) en denim léger, bataillé pour qu’elle m’aille à peu près, dessiné des poches et une encolure, et même créé mon propre tissu à pois avec de la peinture pour aérographe… et des cotons tiges.

The more pictures I take, the more obvious it becomes that I’m often attracted to the same things all over again, consciously or not. Sometimes, it’s only when looking at the pictures on my computer screen that I realize the colors / patterns / textures / subject / etc. remind me of another picture I took years ago. I especially enjoy when seemingly separated at birth images happen to have been taken on both sides of the ocean. France, and USA. Paris and San Francisco. Faraway, so close.

Plus je prends des photos, et plus il devient évident que je suis souvent attirée par les mêmes choses, consciemment ou non. Parfois, ce n’est qu’en voyant une photo sur mon écran que je m’aperçois que les couleurs / motifs / textures / sujets / etc. me rappellent une autre photo, parfois prise plusieurs années auparavant. J’aime particulièrement quand il se trouve que ces images séparées à la naissance ont été prises des deux côtés de l’océan. France et États-Unis. Paris et San Francisco. Si loin, si proche.

Power poles are part and parcel of San Francisco landscape, and it will come as no surprise that I love them. Not that I would mind if they decided to burry them, but since they are here, for now, I just enjoy their graphic quality. Let’s try to convince you by offering you a wallpaper I made, based on a picture taken in my neighborhood!

So what do you think, from the pictures below? Are power poles a typical and somewhat charming aspect of San Francisco, or a a plain eyesore?

Les poteaux et lignes électriques font partie intégrante du paysage de San Francisco, et vous ne serez probablement pas surpris d’entendre que je les aime beaucoup. Je ne serais évidemment pas opposée à leur disparition si un jour la ville décidait de les enterrer, mais comme ça n’est pas prêt d’arriver, pour l’instant, j’apprécie leur côté très graphique. Pour vous convaincre, voici un fond d’écran créé à partir d’une photo prise dans mon quartier !

Alors, que pensez-vous de ces poteaux électriques ? Élément typique qui ne manque pas d’un certain charme, ou verrue dans le paysage ?

What do you think would happen if you left your country for almost 2 years, and finally came back on vacation for the first time? We didn’t know what to expect as we traveled back from San Francisco to France for the holidays, and oh my, our first reaction was unforeseen. It was a shock.

Imaginez que vous quittiez votre pays pendant presque 2 ans et que vous reveniez finalement y passer des vacances : à votre avis, ça se passerait comment ? Nous ne savions pas vraiment à quoi nous attendre en retournant en France pour les fêtes, mais notre première réaction fut pour le moins inattendue : un choc.

When you live here, it’s hard not to notice how ubiquitous the american flag is in day to day life: so many real flags, like the ones a lot of my neighbors own and display on their houses on many occasions, and so many every day objects featuring red, white and blue stars and stripes – so many that it inspired me a game.

Depuis que je vis ici, j’ai un nouveau jeu en rapport avec mon attrait pour les textures et les couleurs, un jeu inspiré par l’omniprésence du drapeau américain dans la vie quotidienne, aussi bien des vrais drapeaux, comme ceux que mes voisins ont chez eux et accrochent régulièrement sur leurs façades, que des objets qui en reprennent les couleurs et motifs.
