If you want to know more about how an illustration I created for an association eventually inspired me a brooch, the translation is below the last picture!
Il y a quelques mois, j’ai été contactée par l’association Rêve d’Enfance, qui accompagne les enfants malades du cancer et organise chaque année une croisière à la voile en Corse pour ceux qui sont en rémission. Pour l’invitation de leur dîner annuel de gala, ils souhaitaient une illustration (ci-dessus) qui soit une variation autour des éléments de leur logo (ci-dessous) : bateau, eau, étoile, enfance.
Le gala était prévu pendant la période de préparation des fêtes de fin d’année, je voulais donc créer un visuel un peu plus sophistiqué et festif tout en évitant la palette de couleurs traditionnelles de cette période, et tout en lui gardant un côté enfantin. Cela donne donc une dominante bleue, un fond de papier qui fait penser à une plage, un bateau en origami, une écriture cursive, et une mer constituée de bouts de tissus grossièrement découpés en forme de vagues puis scannés (j’étais alors plongée dans mes découpages de nuages en denim, j’ai pioché dans les mêmes tissus !).
Le petit bateau que j’ai pris en photo pour l’intégrer dans la carte est resté sur mon bureau un moment, suivi de bateaux plus petits, d’essais en tissus abandonnés puis repris, mais ce n’est qu’à l’occasion du dernier Défi’13 que je suis enfin allée au bout d’un premier prototype. Et c’est ainsi que naquit la broche bateau !
A few weeks ago, I was contacted by an association whose aim is to take care of children suffering from cancers and that organize cruises for those in remission. They wished to put an illustration on the invitations sent for their annual gala, a variation around the elements in their logo: boat, water, star, childhood. The gala being organized in december, I tried to give it a more sophisticated and festive look, but still remaining child-like. So here it is (see first image), in faded blue tones, with a paper background reminding of a beach, an origami boat, a cursive typeface, and a sea made of roughly cut wave shaped pieces of fabrics (the very fabrics I was using to cut clouds for my jewelry).
The origami boat I made to take a picture of it remained on my desk for a time, then I made smaller ones, made some tests with fabrics, abandoned them, tried them again, but it’s only to participate to the collective blog Défi’13 to illustrate the theme “Cruise” that I ended up making a first complete prototype. And this is how my new boat brooch was born!

oh, j'adore (is that right?) the illustration and paper boats! AND the lovely brooch. how interesting to see your transition from one medium to another. i'm always interested in an artist's creative process.

ravissant! J'aime beaucoup les deux compos, et l'evolution du design, super.
Ceci dit, il faut que tu saches que le bleu et le blanc font partie des couleurs des fetes de fin d'annee.
Ben oui : ce sont les couleurs de Hannukah , qui est fete a peu pres en meme temps que Noel. On rale tout le temps en France a cause du pere Noel Coca Cola qui fait que tout est rouge a Noel, mais les US ont plusieurs codes de couleurs pour la meme periode: dans le genre rate de l'hegemonisme, je trouve ca rigolo.
Du coup moi les fetes de fin d'annee je vais portnawak, ca correspond toujours a quelque chose. :D
Genre la jolie broche nuage, elle va etre super pour cette fin d'annee…Elle est super tout le temps, tu me diras ;)

Both your illustration and the brooch are so lovely! You nailed the combination of sophisticated and childlike… both young and old will be captivated by what you've done. I am delighted by the 3-D elements of the brooch, especially the little boat itself. It's charm reminds me of one of my favorite nursery rhymes; Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

I love le petit bateau blue clair, your illustration and brooch! Very dreamy and fairy tale, the 3D, or pop-out aspect of the boat is so appealing too.

Del : on voit effectivement aussi du bleu pendant la période des fêtes, disons que ce ne sont pas seulement les couleurs mais plus globalement l'esthétique dominante correspondant à cette période dont je ne suis pas fan :). (Et re-merci pour la broche ;)).
